Portuguese Easter Bread

This is a soft, slightly sweet, rich bread. It smells and tastes amazing. This recipe yields two loaves:  enough to share with a friend!

In your bread machine, place in recommended order:Easter bread 1 (6)
1 cup milk
3 tbl butter
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
3 1/2 cups bread flour
2 1/2 tsp yeast

Use BASIC DOUGH cycle. This will make a very soft, smooth, wet dough that looks like it didn’t rise enough–don’t worry! Turn onto floured surface, divide in half and shape for prepared loaf pans. Place in pans. Let rise 1 hour (it won’t rise too much) and then bake at 375 for about 35 minutes. It will rise higher in the oven, so leave enough room between oven racks.

If you don’t like a dark crust, bake this bread at 350 but keep the bake time at 35 minutes.

Nutrition information is based on 16 slices per loaf. We weigh it, just to be sure:  14 carbs per ounce.

Whoever said “Man cannot live by bread alone” never tasted this stuff.
